The cause of diabetes type 2 is inability of the body to utilize insulin produced by the pancreas. The body needs insulin in order to move blood sugar or glucose to the cells in order to produce energy. Resistance of body cells to insulin results to inability to convert blood sugar or glucose into energy leading to accumulation of glucose which is a condition known as hyperglycemia that leads to the symptoms of diabetes. Most people with diabetes type 2 also suffer from increased blood insulin level aside from hyperglycemia.The most common cause of diabetes type 2 is obesity. This happens because fat causes interference with the body’s ability to utilize insulin effectively. However, there are also thin patients who suffer from this type of diabetes, most of them being elderly patients.

Another cause of diabetes type 2 is insulin resistance. This refers to inability of the various cells of the body to absorb insulin which causes accumulation of blood sugar or glucose in the blood over time and lead to hyperglycemia. Since the pancreas continuously produce insulin and the cells of the body are not utilizing it, increased insulin level is also observed in some patients. Again, overweight patients are the ones prone to insulin resistance because excessive body fat interferes with effective insulin utilization by the body cells. Hypertension or high blood pressure is also a factor known to be a cause of diabetes type 2.

Other risk factors include race or ethnicity; Native Americans, African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans have higher risks for diabetes type 2; previous history of impaired glucose tolerance, HDL cholesterol levels lower than 35 mg/dL and high triglyceride levels. Old age can also be a cause of diabetes type 2.
