Diabetic Menus: Tools for a Healthier Lifestyle for Diabetics

When you or a loved one is diagnosed with diabetes, the first questions that come to mind is: what are the particular diabetic menus he will need and how would this affect your lifestyle.  Thankfully, after the initial shock and concern, you (under usual conditions) would find out that the conditions required of a diabetic are not as difficult and as very different from what is required of any normal and healthy person of the same age and sex, who wishes to lead a healthy lifestyle.

You would find a sudden interest in diabetic medications, diabetic exercise, diabetic menus, and the usual dos and don’ts that anyone with diabetes must adhere to.  You might even notice that anything that starts with “diabetic” becomes of interest to you.

Let’s take a look at some menus (now they’re no longer just menus for you—but diabetic menus).  These menus are meals that follow specific dietary guidelines that allow you to control blood sugar and minimize complications.  In a sense, adhering to dietary requirements, coupled with appropriate exercise regimen, is your initial step to living a healthy lifestyle.  Try reading general health literatures and you will see a common denominator: balanced meals or diet, and exercise regardless of whether one is diabetic or not.

As it is, diabetes forces anyone afflicted with it to simply live a healthy lifestyle.  After all, everyone is supposed to be living that way, but having no ailments like diabetes just make some people become complacent about their health—until they get sick.  It wouldn’t be an off-chance that, by following this new health regimen, diabetes or not, you, or your diabetic loved one, would even turn out healthier than the boy or girl next door.

A trip to your local registered dietitian and/or consulting different literatures provided by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Pyramid would prove to be very helpful.  The ADA offers guidelines for controlling diabetes, its blood-sugar issues, and help in attaining weight loss or maintaining the ideal weight.

By observing diabetic menus, and proper exercise, you or your diabetic loved one, would be alongside any health buff that is living a healthy lifestyle.  Some people prefer low-carb diet like the Atkins diet, some go for the south beach diet for “good carbohydrates”, others go vegetarian, you go diabetic menus.  Don’t let the word “diabetic” distract you from the truth: this menu is a health diet plan.

Like other health buffs, or just any other normal health-conscious person, you would be well-versed with food exchanges, calorie counts, etc.  You can still go to your favorite hang-outs or restaurant but you would have better-informed food choices—just like any other health-conscious person.

For starters, it would also be a good idea to carry a miniature version of a diabetic menu guide or food exchange guide so that you can check on some of the food items you are unsure of.

Planning a diabetic menu in advance helps to keep guessing to a minimum.  Planning starts from preparing the grocery list to scheduling daily menus.  If you plan a diabetic menu in advance, you have much better control over healthy eating than you would if you just tried to throw something together for a meal at the last minute.

It would be wise that everyone in the household would understand the positive aspects of following a healthy diet.  Diabetic menus need not be boring and un-exciting; they should be good even for the non-diabetics.  Don’t forget the food requirements of the non-diabetic members of the family, too.
