Ways to Avail of Health Insurance for Diabetics

A health insurance for diabetics would greatly help in covering the cost of getting medications and supplies for a diabetic person. A person with diabetes usually gets by with self-managed medication maintenance.  For him to stay healthy, a person with diabetes would need supplies for these medications, and he would need them for life.
Sadly though, while diabetics need more money to finance their medications, they are mostly faced with difficulties in finding employment because of their condition.  To add insult to injury, obtaining a health insurance for diabetics and life insurance coverage proves to be very difficult—and even bordering on being impossible.

If ever one gets lucky to find insurance coverage, they are faced with another hurdle: paying for a much higher premium.  One could not help but feel the tragedy of the situation: unemployable and uninsurable—basically a recipe for a heart-breaking, tragic story.

One need not lose all hope.  There are certain developments over the years that are beginning to improve the plight of diabetics in search of health benefits and a growing number of commercial policies are slowly being made available as health insurance for diabetics.
One other way to get better coverage is to combine one type of health insurance policy with another to improve overall coverage.  To further aid in this plight, here is a list of five approaches of obtaining health insurance :

1.  Employer-Provided Group Insurance
2.  Guaranteed Issue Individual Insurance
3.  Limited Benefit Commercial Health Insurance
4.  Short-Term Medical Insurance
5.  Medicaid and other welfare plans
Employer-Provided Group Insurance is an existing law in all American states that guarantees health insurance coverage to employees of companies that provide health coverage on a group basis.  This insurance coverage can be combined with supplemental coverage listed in number 4 of our list to minimize the financial impact of deductibles and co-pays.
Guaranteed Issue Individual Insurance includes COBRA coverage, HIPAA plans, individual conversion plans, Basic Health Insurance and state assigned-risk pools.  This is available in all states, but is almost impossible to avail of because of its preventive cost that is beyond the capacity of most diabetics.  To pay for health insurance from your own pockets, withdrawals can be taken from the diabetic’s IRA account without penalty, or in some cases, a Health Saving Account can be utilized when you are not included in any group insurance plan or simply out of work.
Limited Benefit Commercial Health Insurance is increasingly being made available as health insurance for diabetics.  However, these are not major medical insurance coverage so these should be combined with other policies.
Short-Term Medical Insurance is available for 1 to 36 months of coverage but excludes pre-existing medical conditions.  This is available to most non-insulin dependent diabetics.
Medicaid and other welfare plans are different alternatives for health insurance for diabetics who cannot afford coverage from any other insurance establishments.  Normally the process of applying for this is handled directly by the local welfare office.
Considering all five approaches, anyone having the Employer Provided Group Insurance is the luckiest.  It means they are working and they are protected by a health insurance for diabetics and they get help in paying the premiums as their employers pay part of it.  If you are one of these lucky souls, count your blessings and stay on your job for as long as you can.
